A tragedy in Lower Township on Saturday night when a 3-year-old girl died after falling into a septic tank.

Cape May County Attorney Jeffrey Sutherland says the incident happened just before 9:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Sutherland said the Lower Township Police received an emergency call at the Sun Outdoor Campground on Route 9 in Erma. When the officers arrived, they found an unresponsive three-year-old girl who had fallen into a septic tank. It was pulled out before the police arrived.

The girl was taken to the Cape Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead later that night.
