Cooking is a basic need, so it is important to have tools that will help you get your job done as easily as possible. Perhaps you are part of the disabled community, less mobile than you used to be (or caring for aging relatives), or healing after a recent surgery. The world of accessibility technology for your home is growing fast, even though it’s not always super searchable online. That’s why we – Verified Editors Sarah Kovac and Madison Trapkin – worked together to compile this list of basic kitchen gadgets that might be useful for people with reduced mobility.
A quick note on our areas of expertise: Sarah has written several articles that relate to her own experiences as a member of the disabled community, as well as parents and smart homes. Madison is an expert on kitchen gadgets, from hand blenders to juicers. Our recommendations are based on a combination of our respective areas of expertise. However, we understand that these tools may not be helpful for all people.
1. Electric can opener
A good can opener is essential in any kitchen, and Sarah loves her Black & Decker electric can opener. As this model is currently out of stock, we recommend the Kitchen Mama Electric Can Opener as it has over 20,000 reviews on Amazon with an average rating of 4.5 stars. Users say this gadget is great for people who only use one hand.

2. Electric jar opener
Store-bought sauces are great for dinners that require little cooking. However, for people with arthritic hands, one-handed, or shaky hands, it can be difficult to open the jars. Enter: the hands-free Robo Twist Electric Jar Opener, the best jar opener we’ve tested. Sarah uses a similar model in her kitchen, and online reviewers note that this particular model would be great for the elderly.

3. One-handed preparation board
The Etac Deluxe One Hand Peeling Board has everything you need to cut and dice when cooking with one hand or using your feet (like Sarah does). This board includes a tilt knife with a wooden handle to make cutting easier. You can also attach four friction or suction feet to the bottom of the board to increase stability.
Part of the board has tiny spikes to hold smaller foods like tomatoes and onions in place while slicing. It also features a series of “bakes” that can hold a bowl, grater, or large food in place. While we haven’t tested this product yet, the average rating of 4.5 stars on Amazon and reviews such as “This is a Mandatory for Every One Handed Person” make us excited to try it soon.
Get the Etac Deluxe One-Handed Peeling Board on Amazon for $ 86.99
4. Drawing chair
Sarah loves her dark gray Flash Furniture Drafting Chair – she recommends this color for kitchen use as it doesn’t look dirty as quickly as black. This chair is surprisingly comfortable, can climb quite high on the countertop when cooking, and quite low when sitting at the dining table.
If you have a tile kitchen, Sarah suggests swapping out the plastic wheels that this chair comes with for rubber wheels. If you don’t need the same height range, you can roll a standard office chair into your kitchen instead.

5. Water dispenser with base load
Water is another basic human need and this Primo bottom-loading dispenser also features a built-in bowl of 20 K-cup bowls. That’s right – this water dispenser can also brew coffee! Sarah loves this bottom loading model as replacing the water bottles doesn’t require heavy lifting. You just slide the replacement in.
Get the Primo Bottom Loading Water Dispenser on Amazon starting at $ 285
6. Google Nest Hub
At Reviewed, we love Google’s Nest Hub. Sarah has an older model than the one we recently tested, but both models share the same super helpful recipe technology that can make cooking a breeze. The Nest Hub can look up recipes, read them to you, and save them for future reference, for a completely hands-free recipe. If you prefer Amazon products, the Echo Show has similar features and can help hands-free in the kitchen as well.

7. Cooking plate
A hotplate can come in handy when you want everything in one place in your kitchen. Sarah keeps this portable induction hob on the counter next to her sink (safe distance, don’t worry!), Otherwise it would be difficult for her to move between stations.
Get the Amazon Basics 1800W portable induction hob burner for $ 57.96
8. Above the sink
If we’re honest, this should be a must have for any kitchen, mobility impaired, or otherwise above the sink. It has adjustable arms on either side so you can place it over your sink when straining pasta or washing products. The oval shape is specially designed to prevent the bottom of the strainer from touching your sink. And with over 4,000 reviews on Amazon and an average rating of 4.5 stars, users agree that this kitchen gadget rocks.
