Adirondack Council praises Warren County’s proposed septic inspection law

LAKE GEORGE, NY (NEWS10) – The Adirondack Council on Monday commended the recently proposed Warren County’s Septic System Inspection Bill, which is under scrutiny by the County Board of Supervisors. This new law would protect water quality in Lake George, Schroon Lake, Loon Lake, Brant Lake, and the Schroon and Hudson Rivers.

The proposal would require that homes with sewage treatment plants located within 250 feet of these bodies of water have their sanitation systems checked on site when they are sold to new owners. It is based on existing laws in the cities of Queensbury and Inlet.

“Lake George has more than 6,000 septic tanks in the watershed, most of them in Warren County,” said William C. Janeway, executive director of the Adirondack Council. “With the recent damaging algal bloom event and other water quality issues in the park, it is important that we add sanitation inspections to our toolbox of mitigation measures to protect the Adirondack waters we drink, recreational needs and dependence on our economy.”

David Miller, the Adirondack Council’s Clean Water Program coordinator, stated that the inspection requirements at the time of sale are the least likely to bother the homeowner. He said the septic inspection will become part of the regular series of home inspections required before closing a sale, such as: B. construction, plumbing, pest, radon, etc., he said. If work is needed, it can be financed through the sale.

While the Adirondack Council believes this proposed septic tank inspection act is an important addition to the strategy, it also believes that other Lake George counties and parishes should follow suit and expand the inspections to all homeowners and businesses.

The county is expected to review the new law at its monthly meeting on March 19th.
