After initial ‘heart attack’ woman able to laugh off mistaken $91K electric bill

A Rosh Ha’ayin woman nearly fell off her chair after reading her last utility bill, which billed her NIS 2,947,671.97 ($ 91,2419.61) for the last two months of her service.

“My husband almost had a heart attack!” Yafit told Channel 12 on Wednesday.

But when Yafit realized that such a large number must be the result of a mistake by the Israel Electric Corporation, Yafit was able to laugh at the initial horror.

“We joked that we forgot to turn off the water heater,” she said.

Yafit shared a picture of the bill on a popular Facebook group for Israeli women with the headline “And that, my friends, keep the air conditioning on all summer in my cottage in Rosh HaAyin”. The post went viral and received thousands of likes and reactions.

A representative of the Israel Electric Corporation then turned to Yafit: “The employee thought I was going to mess with her.”

When he found that the number on the bill was in fact almost three million shekels, the customer service representative corrected the error in the IEC system and sent the family a new bill.

In a statement by the IEC it was said that the astronomical calculation was the result of a “human error”.

The statement pointed out that electricity prices in Israel are cheaper than in Europe.
