AIA Survey Reveals Emerging Bathroom and Kitchen Trends

The following is a press release from the American Institute of Architects announcing the results of its latest home design trend survey.

Despite the negative economic impact of the pandemic on the planning and construction sectors, custom residential architects have done surprisingly well, according to new data from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) residential design survey, which focuses on kitchens and bathrooms.

The results showed that in 2020 there was an ongoing demand for kitchen and bathroom design features that are accessible to all people regardless of age or ability – the so-called universal design. Outdoor kitchen spaces continued to be the leading kitchen trend for the fourth year in a row, while larger walk-in showers topped the list of the most popular bathroom features. The report also noted an increasing popularity of hands-free / sensor faucets in kitchens and bathrooms. Pantry; and outdoor showers.

“Features like larger pantry for more food storage and hands-free faucets are likely part of the long-term impact of the pandemic on home design,” said AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker, Ph.D., Hon. AIA. “While the pandemic has resulted in sluggish conditions in the non-residential sector, residential architects are optimistic as the project backlogs remain healthy.”

The results of the report also revealed the terms and conditions for residential architecture firms for the fourth quarter of 2020, including:

  • All custom residential sectors saw growth, with home improvement continuing to see the strongest increases.
  • On average, the companies estimate a four percent increase in sales for the first quarter of 2021 compared to the fourth quarter of 2020.
  • The project bills were 65.2.

The AIA Home Design Trends Survey is conducted quarterly with a panel of more than 500 architectural firms that focus their practice on the residential sector. For more information on the latest survey results, please visit the AIA website.
