Ask Ashleigh: How to choose the perfect sink and faucet

Those who want to improve their own home are spoiled for choice these days. There are so many options in different product categories that it seems impossible to decide.

While we tend to view our kitchen sinks as a practical necessity, they are not just a basic facility; They can also highlight your sense of style. The same goes for the faucet you choose. Use these choices to express your sense of design.

Luckily Sault Ste. Marie Heritage Home Hardware Expert Ashleigh is ready to share some of her top tips. Here’s what she recommends for anyone looking to pick the perfect sink and faucet.

DO THE WASHING UP

While some homeowners just want something to fit in, others want to make a mark wherever they can, and if they can choose a new material or finish, they will.

Stainless steel is always a classic known for its longevity, but there are now many new finishes to choose from. Hoping to add drama? How about a black or bronze granite sink? Copper is another standout material, and you don’t have to worry about mismatched metals: mixed metals are a growing trend in kitchens. Fireclay sinks are another popular choice. They are ideal for country-style kitchens, cozy and modern at the same time.

Below are the different types of sinks you can choose from:

Drop-in / top mount

Built-in sinks are easy to install, you simply drop the sink into a pre-cut hole in your countertop and secure it underneath. The edge of the kitchen sink rests on the counter for stability. The built-in sink is popular for its affordability and versatility, and it goes with most countertop styles.

Undermount sink

An undermount kitchen sink is the opposite, it is attached under the worktop without a rim. It creates a sleek, seamless look and is easy to clean.

Farmhouse / apron sink

A farmer’s sink, also known as an apron sink, has single or double basins with a characteristic front part that splashes over the counter. It is stylish and ideal for anyone who cooks and bakes a lot, as it offers plenty of space for washing larger pots, pans and baking trays. They are also an important design feature of the modern country or country kitchen.

The most popular finish for this type of sink is white porcelain, although stainless steel and copper versions are becoming increasingly popular. Check your cabinets to make sure they can be installed on the front skirt, advises Ashleigh.

Bar sink

A bar sink is much smaller than a traditional kitchen sink and is a great addition to any home bar or entertainment area. Many add a bar sink to their kitchen islands where they can act as an additional prep sink.

Faucets

Kitchen faucets are another important design element that goes beyond their function. They are a great opportunity to make a statement, either subtly complimenting your existing decor or providing an eye-catching contrast that turns me on.

Whether you’re replacing a faucet because your existing faucet is broken or you’re upgrading as part of a kitchen renovation, make sure you know the number of mounting holes on your sink and / or counter before buying. If you have a two-hole sink, consider installing a single-hole faucet. You can use the second hole for an additional function, such as a sprayer or soap dispenser.

Pull-out and pull-down faucets

This type of faucet looks elegant and is fun. It makes cleaning up so much easier, including the sink itself. Choose your preferred metal, whether it’s matte black, stainless steel, or brushed gold. If you want something different, you might like the spring-like fitting, which is sure to attract attention.

Contactless kitchen fittings

Hands-free faucets reduce the spread of germs and are easy to keep clean. They are especially useful in households with young children. A sensor starts the water flow and some models have an automatic shutdown that helps save water.

Single and two-handle kitchen fittings

The single lever mixer can be found in most kitchens thanks to its simplicity and ease of use. An integrated handle regulates both the water temperature and the water pressure. Conventional two-handle faucets provide more precise temperature control for hot and cold temperatures; they also need three holes for installation. If your kitchen sink has three mounting holes, a traditional two-handle faucet is a popular choice. Find both one and two handle faucets in a variety of styles including chrome, brushed nickel and bronze.

Kitchen fittings for wall mounting

These are a great space saving choice as they free up counter space. If you have a smaller kitchen and want to maximize the available counter space, look for a wall-mounted faucet.

EXECUTIONS

Now the fun part: pick your finishes! All of the following are durable, easy to clean, compliment most kitchen appliances, and will suit any design style.

Stainless steel is high-gloss and ensures an elegant look. Brushed nickel is warm and classic. Chrome is shiny; it can grab attention and make a real statement. Bronze comes in many varieties, such as satin and rubbed oil. Matte black is versatile and modern, and works best for more contemporary or industrial designs.
