Best of Design: New Kitchen

In Kathryn Heinauer’s kitchen with its lively blue and soothing white, willow and grass fabric, only the view of the coast is missing.

No, this year’s Best New Kitchen winner is not an entry outside of the Nantucket or Cape Cod area. The family’s Pine Township residence, built by Barrington Homes, is specially designed to make them feel all year round to be on the beach.

“The architecture of the houses in Cape Cod and on Nantucket has always impressed me,” says Heinauer. “Whenever I’ve been there and seen that, I never get sick of it.”

Heinauer is a designer at Barrington Homes and a real estate agent at Keller Williams. Her husband Grant is in charge of the site management. In developing their vision of the ideal kitchen, the couple, who have three children, said that having a place where everyone can gather for family meals is key.

The main island, fitted with cabinets and coated with Sherwin-Williams’ Interesting Aqua, extends to a lower top with a furniture base. The wicker seats are from Serena & Lily.

“I really wanted the main seating area to feel more like a piece of furniture because that’s where we spend most of the time eating,” says Heinauer.

Beneath quartz countertops and large windows overlooking the courtyard is a custom-made walnut sink. The marble tile mosaic backsplash is one of Heinauer’s most popular items in the house, although it wasn’t an easy task picking just one from Artistic Tile of New York that they ordered through Splash / Nicklas Supply.

“The mosaics they create are just amazing,” she says. “When I saw that, all I knew was that I had to somehow integrate that into the room. I go to the kitchen and watch this and love it every day. “

Carrara subway tiles complement the mosaic and add to the rest of the kitchen.

“I had the feeling that they fit together really well and play well against each other,” says Heinauer.

Just beyond a small section of additional work space, the barrel ceiling of a short walkway highlights the entrance to the mud room. A sliding gate in the same color as the island leads to the walk-in pantry.

Wallpaper in the glass cabinets at both ends of the worktop in a blue and white theme. The golden sink faucet and lights, the black hardware on the sink base and the brushed nickel on the cabinets are also interesting.

“The designer has chosen a range of materials that harmonize perfectly with one another,” says judge Stephanie Schill Hayden from Schill Architecture in Cleveland. “The gold lights gave the room a luxurious feel, but the light blue cabinets with island and wooden sinks added a cozy, homely feel that feels right for a family home.”
