Blinn College, TEEX add carpentry and plumbing night courses

Blinn College and Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) have added night carpentry and plumbing classes to the workforce training courses offered on the Texas A&M University Systems RELLIS campus in Bryan.

The first section of the plumbing night course begins on Monday, November 27th. The courses take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. The carpentry night course starts on Tuesday, November 28th and takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from November 5th: 30am to 9:30 pm

Blinn’s 19-week plumbing and 20-week carpentry programs consist of eight contact hours per week and do not require any prior knowledge to be successful on the course. Scholarships are available to support the program costs.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, national plumber demand is expected to grow 16 percent between 2016 and 2026, creating 75,800 additional jobs with an average wage of $ 51,450 per year. Workforce Solutions Brazos Valley expects local growth of 25 percent over the same period with hourly wages between $ 12.01 and $ 36.23.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, national demand for carpenters is expected to grow 8 percent between 2016 and 2026, creating 87,000 jobs nationwide with an average wage of $ 43,600 per year. Workforce Solutions Brazos Valley expects 23 percent local growth over the same period with hourly wages between $ 8.62 and $ 23.79.

Blinn’s plumbing and carpentry programs are based on the National Center for Building Education and Research (NCCER) curriculum. This nationally recognized curriculum was developed in collaboration with more than 125 builders, representatives of professional associations and academic executives. Students who take these courses earn NCCER certification, the OSHA 10-hour card, and certificates from Blinn College and TEEX.

The carpenter’s program includes 200 contact hours for qualification and assessments of basic safety. Construction mathematics; basic rigging; Building materials, fasteners and adhesives; Hand tools and power tools; Construction drawings, specifications and layout; Floor systems; Wall systems; Ceiling and roof frames; Building envelope systems; Basic stair layout.

The plumbing program includes 200 contact hours of training and skills assessment covering basic safety. Construction math, hand tools, power tools, construction drawings, basic rigging; introductory plumbing; Plumbing tools; Plumbing math; Plumbing drawings; Plastic pipes and fittings; Copper pipe and fittings; Cast iron pipes and fittings; Steel pipes and fittings; Fittings; Drainage, waste and ventilation systems; and water distribution systems.

Both programs include a 10-hour construction training course that covers OSHA standards, guidelines and practices in the construction industry. Topics include the scope and application of standards, building health and safety principles, and a special focus on those areas of construction that are most dangerous.

Students 18 years or older who are allowed to work in the United States and are enrolled in the Selective Service (if male) are eligible for a scholarship that reduces the cost of the carpenter course to $ 975 and the plumbing course to $ 900 .
