Builders’ Merchants News – New Plumbing & Heating Merchant Index shows slower sales in January

The start of a third lockdown in January is likely to have had a detrimental effect on indoor work.

The second report of the sanitary and heating index, which is based on data from the GfK committee for sanitary and heating retailers, which accounts for over 80% of the market value, shows that sales of sanitary and heating retailers in January were up by 5.0 compared to January 2020 % has decreased.

The start of a third lockdown in January is likely to have had a detrimental effect on indoor work. Two trading days less this year also contributed to the decline. The average daily sales that take this into account shows that sales were 4.5% higher than last January.

Sales compared to the previous month were positive, increasing by 18.5% in January compared to December 2020. This was supported by three more trading days in January. After adjusting for trading days, sales were still higher (+ 0.7%).

The January PHMI index, which contrasts sales with the January to December 2019 base period, was 99.4.

The new report, released last month, shows the month-to-month sales performance of specialist plumbing and heating dealers. The new Plumbing & Heating Merchant Index (PHMI) report is the first to analyze point of sales data compiled by a range of specialist plumbing and heating traders with combined annual sales of £ 3 billion.

The report also shows the impact of the pandemic on specialist plumbing and heating traders, showing the sector’s gradual recovery since the decline caused by the first spring lockdown.

MRA Research produces the monthly report that provides reliable data, a platform and a voice for the industry and the leading plumbing and heating brand. There is no overlap or double counting between PHMI and the Builders Merchants Building Index sales data.

Tom Rigby, Commercial Director at MRA Research, who also produces the BMBI reports, said, “The PHMI trending data tracks what is happening in the specialist plumbing and heating retailer market month after month, and this new report gives the industry a big boost more accurate access insights than previously available.

“Unlike data from sources based on relatively small samples or estimates, or sales by suppliers to the supply chain, this current data is based on actual sales from specialist plumbing and heating dealers. It’s practically the market. “
