Champion Plumbing Advises Oklahoma City Homeowners On What Not To Flush

OKLAHOMA CITY, August 10, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Champion Plumbing, a leader in plumbing services to the Oklahoma City urges homeowners to carefully monitor what they flush down the toilet to keep their plumbing and local water supplies clean and clear.

“A lot of people think the toilet is a universal disposal system, but unfortunately that’s not true,” said Brent Harpole, Co-owner of Champion Plumbing. “Bathroom plumbing is designed to handle waste and toilet paper, and flushing everything else can create major problems for your home and even add to public health and safety risks.”

Harpole reminds residents of the area to avoid anything that is not specifically designed for it, including many products marketed as flushable. Some of the most common problematic items are:

  • “Flushable” wipes: Most products labeled “flushable”, including wipes and diaper liners, are not suitable for plumbing applications. These products don’t dissolve like TP and can cause serious clogs and backups.
  • Cat litter: Even biodegradable “flushable” litter is designed to absorb moisture, so that some varieties can still clump together and clog pipes. Cat droppings can also spread the dangerous parasitic disease Toxoplasma into the water supply, putting marine animals at risk.
  • Medication: Unlike other items on this list, pills dissolve. However, the chemicals released will find their way into local water supplies as well as nearby rivers, lakes and oceans, with potentially serious effects on the environment and health.
  • Personal items: Bathroom care and hygiene products, such as cotton balls, cotton swabs, bandages, and floss, clump and build up in the plumbing, potentially slowing or blocking the flow of water. Also, many of these items contain plastic that should never get into the water supply.

“It might seem like a small thing, but occasionally rinsing a cotton swab or paper towel can prove to be an expensive and inconvenient habit,” said Harpole. “If you break this habit, your home plumbing system can perform as intended and extend the life of your pipes. It also reduces the risk of contamination, which not only helps protect you and your family from some potential health and environmental impacts, but also helps protect your neighbors. ”
