Christchurch “go-to” Apprentice Wins Plumbing World Scholarship

Christchurch-based trainee Oliver (Ollie) Tabak has won a World Plumbing Scholarship at the 2021 National New Zealand Plumbing Awards taking place in Blenheim on Friday March 26th.

Ollie was only 19 when he joined Clyne & Bennie in 2019 as a plumbing, gas and drainage apprentice at Masterlink. From day one, it has proven to be consistent, reliable and extremely enjoyable. Ollie brings a positive attitude towards all of his jobs, which is reflected in the feedback from employees, contractors, and customers.

In the past 12 months he has been working on a major project – the construction of a large new retirement village in the Nelson / Tasman region. He excelled in his plumbing knowledge and helped build a very complex technical room, which, according to Ollie, is his proudest accomplishment to date.

His hard work, his strong work ethic and his processing impressed the project manager Richard Aitken from Telford Consulting immediately. He went on to say: “Ollie is one of my employees on site, no matter what the situation.” Ollie has also contributed to the health and safety culture in the workplace.

Ollie shows great maturity in his willingness to learn and help, and listens and engages not only in the workplace but also outside of work. For this project, Ollie agreed to move to Nelson for a year to live with other employees in a company house and leave his family and friends in Christchurch.

“Clyne & Bennie are very fortunate to have Ollie on our team,” said James Cowles, director of the company. “I’m sure Ollie will become a great craftsman going forward that our industry will be proud of.”

Plumbing World Scholarships are awarded to Masterlink trainees who have demonstrated hard work and a passion for the industry in their studies.

Oliver wins a trophy, certificate, and $ 1000 to spend at his local Plumbing World office.

As the overall winner of the Supreme Scholarship, Oliver also received full registration for the 2021 plumbing conference in New Zealand, including travel and accommodation, as well as a free ticket to the awards.
