EAU CLAIRE, Wisconsin (WLAX / WEUX) – There are more than 200,000 lead pipes in the state of Wisconsin, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The city of Eau Claire has a program that will allow around 900 private water pipes to replace their lead pipes.

The city of Eau Claire has been working with the DNR since 2017 to raise funds for the removal of lead pipes from private property. You have received $ 800 thousand since then. Now they are requesting more to keep this program going.

Property owners who may have lead pipes fill out an application with the city. If they qualify, the city will reimburse the cost of replacements up to $ 2,000. Lane Berg is the city’s Utilities Manager. He hopes people will use this resource.

Berg said, “Now is a good thing because they have probably already outlived their life expectancy. So we encourage people to use the program because we have money to help them with this replacement. Who knows in the future? We may not have the money for it. “

The DNR is currently accepting public comments on the proposal by the City of Eau Claire to allocate additional funding to this program.
