Coffeetime Column: Green grass, fences and septic tanks | Opinion

Have you ever had the chance to spend time on the farm or just drive through the countryside? If so, you’ve probably seen horses and cows grazing in pastures, and you probably noticed something.

These animals do not like to stay where they were housed by their owner. And nobody really knows why.

Here is the most commonly seen scenario. The farmer or rancher buys them or raises them from birth. In the warmer months he puts them on his fenced green pastures to graze to their heart’s content. He ensures they have access to water year round and gives them expensive store-bought feed in winter. Provides shelter in the barn when the harsh winter storms hit.

Food, water, shelter and shelter? What more could a four-legged creature want? Obviously a lot more.

They seem to yearn for something right behind the fence, protecting them from predators and traffic. The grass just seems to be calling out her name and convincing that stupid cow that it will taste a hell of a lot better than the grass they’re standing on … three feet away. And somehow the same stupid cow will find a way out of this pasture.

An internal hole-in-the-fence-searching radar must be standard with these animals. Because if there’s only a 6 inch opening in the wiring surrounding the pasture, you can bet the cow can smell it. She will poke her head through that barbed wire and ignore the pain of the cuts just to get an idea of what is outside the fence. Then she will push her bulky body through this hole and squirm until she is completely free and outside the protection of the fence. The owner will likely find her next to a dangerous, busy highway, peacefully grazing on grass that is likely to be much less quality than where it just left.

Worse still, these creatures of rebellion train their offspring to do the same.

“Do you see that fence, Eva’body? That means only one thing. You have to find a way, over it or over it. Because the green stuff on the other side tastes much better than that grass at our feet. Probably tastes a lot like chicken I was told. So you just follow me ladies. “

Just like many two-legged creatures. No matter how good life is or how well the Creator took care of us, some people just can’t stand staying on the fence. You see a blade of grass outside. “Oh yes, you look good!” Then there will be a small hole of opportunity. And a stupid two-legged creature will ignore the painful warning cuts and run straight through the protective fence. The fence that God put up to protect them from harm. Just to try a sip of the weed that grows out there. Probably right above a septic tank.

I’m just saying …
