Cold temperatures keep local plumbing companies busy

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – The cold has been there for a while to create the perfect frozen pipe situation and frozen pipe issues.

A plumbing company in Wichita is inundated with calls this week.

Local tech Chris Griffith said it wasn’t too late to make sure it doesn’t happen to you.

“We have another technology that is preparing to take action,” he said.

Griffith calls himself a sprinkler, but as soon as temperatures drop, he and many of his employees shift gears.

“I got about five or six today. I think the technology I spoke to yesterday had about eight calls,” Griffith said.

One of those callers was Heather Deese. The pipes frozen in her daughter’s house.

“It’s a huge burden when it happens and it hits you hard financially,” Deese said.

Deese was forced to take out a small loan to pay him off.

“$ 400 is not easy to find, especially during difficult times,” Deese said.

Griffith said there are a few things you can do to avoid this burden.

“You really want your pipes to be insulated, maybe with heating tape or a heating cable,” Griffith said.

Griffith also recommends turning on the faucet to keep the water flowing.

“It’s no fun, I know they really don’t like calling me to do this, and I really don’t like being out here doing that, hahaha,” Griffith said.

Griffith said it was also a good idea to make sure your pipes are still properly insulated. Unfortunately, this caused the problem for Deese.
