Crow Wing County offers septic system upgrade assistance

Crow Wing County has received $ 32,746 in grants from the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources to provide funding to replace or protect sewage treatment plants for low-income residents.

Proper septic maintenance will ensure that groundwater is protected from human contamination. Last year, US $ 18,600 in loans from these funds were paid out to county residents under this loan grant program.

“Functioning sewage treatment plants benefit our groundwater quality. It is important not to pollute the groundwater as it is an important source of water, ”said Jacob Frie, head of environmental services, in a press release.

Residents who receive funding will receive a 3% loan from the Five Region Development Commission for 60 months on the cost of the projects. The terms of the loan are set by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.

The total budget granted to an applicant depends on the cost of the system, annual income and the size of the household. Loans can be repaid at any time with no prepayment penalty. An application fee of USD 50 is required at the time of application.

Funding is given primarily to low and very low income landowners. All on-demand low-income applicants are funded to some extent pending the availability of repayment as determined by the North Central Economic Development Association’s Loans Committee.
