“It took years of research, but we managed the pandemic successfully,” says Jose Salas, a water communications specialist in Denver.

He tells Britt Moreno of CBS4 that research teams are tracking neighborhoods with “large numbers of children”. He says Denver Water is targeting neighborhoods with schools or day care centers nearby – and that’s where they begin replacing people’s lines connected to the main line under the streets.

The pipes were originally used for houses built in 1951 or earlier. Salas assures customers that the water is safe.

“You can get lead from paint or toys, as we saw on the news, but we’re removing lead service lines. The water we supply to our customers is lead-free and potable. Do not worry. “

According to Salas, this work is part of a larger project where Denver Water is working to replace sections of pipe to reduce the number of major breaks in the aging system.

“We are now replacing about 106,000 feet of pipe annually and our goal is to increase that number to about 140,000 feet of pipe a year by 2024,” says Salas.

Denver Water will replace 64,000 to 84,000 customer supply lines over the next 14 years to complete the massive project.
