Designer Liz Caan Perfects Her Family Kitchen After 20 Years

Designer Liz Caan and her family have lived in a historic home in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts for nearly two decades. But it wasn’t until last year – a year when so many of us spent so much time at home – that she first tried to bring her design know-how to her own apartment. The end result includes a completely redesigned kitchen that is now a focal point for your entire family.

“I think the nice thing about this house is that it’s always evolving,” Caan tells House Beautiful. “The parts have been moved and repurposed. I didn’t throw things away. I have recovered. I moved art. I sold previous furniture and replaced it with antiques, mostly because I was tired of looking at cheap, poorly finished furniture that I am sure was made in a factory abroad. ”The designer adds that it really is Concentrating on what was important to her and what was not – that shaped her design decisions.

The home kitchen renovation was especially important as Caan’s family of five visits this room the most. Here she transformed an outdated room into a modern oasis with the help of underfloor heating made of Belgian bluestone, sourced from Marmi Natural Stone, as well as cupboards and a sink from deVOL Kitchens. The latter items were all made in the UK, reminding Caan of her family heritage. “My grandfather was from England and my father flew balloons with the Unit Jack flag on them,” she tells us.

The furniture and decor of the room are equally personal, with nearly all of the items coming from dealers and artisans whom Caan knows and admires and with whom he has worked for years. “I wanted this kitchen to have some soul and I wanted to be surrounded by things I love, people I love,” she adds. This warmth is underlined by a multitude of lights that give it an inviting shine.

Ultimately, Caan tried to create a stronger connection between the indoor and outdoor areas in the kitchen of the house while improving functionality and efficiency – and that is exactly what she succeeded in doing.
