Dull Downstairs Toilet Gets an Impressive Revamp

The downstairs toilet is the smallest room in the house that is often found hidden under the stairs. It may be a tricky room to decorate (there’s a lot to do), but one homeowner completely remodeled her own with self-taught DIY skills – and the end result is impressive.

Laura Jones, who runs the local Instagram account @livingwith_laura_j, wanted to breathe new life into her boring, carpeted wardrobe and create a room full of “Scandi Vibes and Neutrals”.

After the old sink, toilet, and floor were removed, Laura started working on her project, scouring Instagram for inspiration. While she enlisted the help of craftsmen to do this more difficult plumbing job, Laura impressively did the rest herself.

“I filled a gap in the baseboard instead of removing the whole thing. I found that even if it’s not perfect after painting, you can generally cover it up and disguise it, ”she tells Jacobs & Dalton. “With DIY, it’s not too difficult to make mistakes look better over time unless it’s structural (in which case be sure to bring in an expert). Don’t worry about trying it out! ‘

The original, tired-looking carpet was replaced with vinyl tiles to keep costs down, while leftover clinker brick slips were chosen as the back wall behind the sink. To complete the look, Laura added a matte black toilet roll holder, a flush ceiling light, a round mirror, a Scandinavian style shelf, and a trendy gallery wall.

“After looking at loads of inspirations on Instagram and Pinterest, I actually found that adding decor and detail to the small space makes it look bigger, not smaller,” she says. “It was just about finding the right amount to add. The addition of functionality gives a sense of size and depth. If it looks bare, it looks almost smaller. ‘

Size isn’t everything when it comes to wardrobes, as this redesign wonderfully proves. Are you looking for inspiration for the downstairs toilet? Check out the before and after pictures below …
