EPA initiative encourages proper maintenance of homeowners’ septic systems, private wells

MONROE, CT – The Monroe Department of Health is participating in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Septic Smart Week initiative September 20-24 to encourage homeowners to properly maintain their sewage treatment plants and private wells.

For information, visit the Monroe Health Department booth at the Monroe Farmers’ Market on Friday, September 24th, 3pm to 6pm

First Selectman Ken Kellogg encourages residents to check with the health department about proper maintenance in order to avoid potentially major problems later.

“A failed sewage system can be very expensive to repair – $ 10,000 to $ 20,000 or more – while pump maintenance is typically $ 300 to $ 400,” Kellogg said.

A failing purification system also degrades the value of your home and, according to Kellogg, may need to be repaired before reselling.

“Learn how to maintain your septic system and private well,” he said. “Our paramedic will be on site at the farmers market to answer your questions and concerns, and provide information on extending the life of your septic tank.”
