After a flurry of fly tips at a popular beauty spot on the Lynher River and in the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a small team of volunteers spent a day cleaning up an estimated two tons of trash last week.

The Wacker Quay, located directly on the A374 between Trerulefoot and Antony and at the mouth of the Lynher, is a paradise for wildlife. It is also a place for fresh air and quiet walks, enjoyed by many locals and especially valued as part of daily exercise under lockdown.

In the past the area has been prone to fly tipping and unfortunately this has increased recently. Items dumped included a washing machine, vacuum cleaner, a slew of decorative garden statues, lots of bags of household, garden and home improvement trash, and even a kitchen sink.

With the help of two socially distant Valley Volunteers, Tamar Valley AONB manager Dan Cooke spent four hours removing the trash that could be picked up by an authorized local contractor.

Dan said: “It is sad that a small minority of people continue to spoil a place as beautiful as Wacker Quay for others by dumping their rubbish. Not only is it illegal, it’s awkward and dangerous to people, wildlife, and pets.

“It is especially frustrating as much of what we have deleted is recyclable and can easily be taken to the council’s household waste recycling center in Saltash.”

He added, “This cleanup was a collaborative effort and we would like to thank the Tamar Community Trust for coordinating their volunteers safely and the Cornwall Council for advice on waste disposal. We will now work together to prevent and prevent further tips at Wacker Quay in the long term. “
