Experts offer tips on how to prevent your pipes from freezing as temperatures drop | FOX 4 Kansas City WDAF-TV

KANSAS CITY, MO. – If temperatures continue to drop, your home is at risk of frozen pipes. When these pipes freeze, the damage can come at a high cost.

Jody Gardner, a field manager at Anthony Plumbing Heating and Cooling, said frozen pipes could ruin a house.

“It does a lot of damage. It ruins houses, ruins ceilings, ruins floors, ”he said.

Every year thousands of homes in the area suffer from not properly preparing for winter weather.

“An 8-inch crack can spill more than 250 gallons of water a day. This can cost thousands of dollars in damage to floors, carpets and furniture, ”said Chris Pilcic, a State Farm spokesman.

“The average homeowner claim was just over $ 8,000 in Missouri. Expensive in Kansas too. The average homeowner claim in Kansas was $ 9,900, ”he added.

Here is a five step process that will reduce the chance of pipes being frozen.

  • Let cold water drip overnight, preferably from taps on an outside wall.
  • Open the cabinet doors to allow heat to get to uninsulated pipes under sinks near outside walls.
  • Keep your thermostat at the same temperature day and night.
  • Insulate exposed water pipes, e.g. B. in crawl spaces, basements or near external walls.
  • Disconnect the hoses.

In addition to these steps, Pilcic recommends that you meet with your insurance agent to make sure you are covered.

“The steps you are taking now could help whether this winter storm gets a little better,” said Pilcic.
