When shopping for older homes, in addition to your regular inspection, you should really be completing a sewer as well. A sewer is exactly what it sounds like. They send a long cable camera with a light in your drain down to the municipal sewer to find problems such as roots growing through or cracks in your sewer.
Since the house we bought was built in 1920, we had a sewer built. You can check out our sewer here if you’re interested (it’s not as disgusting as you might expect):
