Mina Starsiak falcon and her mother, Karen Laine, are known for renovating homes in Indianapolis at Good Bones, but they are helping another renovation team learn the craft for their latest Flip.
Starsiak Hawk is involved in the episode “Historic Cottage for Flippers” Courtney and his brother-in-law David on her very first flip. These two got off to a bad start when they paid a whopping $ 62,500 for this old house. (Starsiak Hawk usually pays a fraction of that for their Fixer tops.) The team is also in big trouble when they receive work interruption orders from their historic home company that push the schedule far.
Starsiak Hawk is helping these two repair this old home with a $ 200,000 renovation budget and a cottage style that she knows buyers will love. The “Good Bones” team helps these beginner pinball machines with lots of tips that might inspire you to try it out for yourself.
Colorful landscaping looks best against a clean white house
The newbies probably paid too much for this old house.

Laine explains that this house is in a historic part of town known for its appealing curb and beautiful front gardens. So she works hard to create a landscape design that will fit this colorful street. But the exterior takes a lot more than landscaping.
Starsiak Hawk wants to give this home an updated cottage aesthetic so she gives the porch a cozy makeover and adds large windows. Meanwhile designer MJ Coyle chooses a clean white exterior color that will not distract attention from the bright foliage (and which historical society will approve of).
“All the landscaping is going to pop against it, and that’s going to be bright and colorful,” says Coyle.
The new white exterior makes this house shine.

The lesson: keep it simple. Here a strong house color would have been a distraction from the large, beautiful garden.

“It adds an interesting layer of character to the original house,” he says.

Put your kitchen island on wheels
The whole house was a mess before renovation.

This house is a good size but the kitchen isn’t big. Starsiak Hawk wants to add an island, but she doesn’t want it to be in the way. Coyle makes sure the island is mobile.
“It’s on wheels, so if it’s ever in the way you can just move it to one side or the other,” he says.
An island doesn’t have to stay in one place if it has wheels.

Also, this island has a butcher block top. In addition to pulling up some stools and using this island as a table, buyers can also use it as a cutting board, which makes this little kitchen a lot more functional.
There are many options when it comes to islands. They don’t all have to be a huge feature with a built-in sink and seating area. Sometimes a small, mobile island is exactly what a kitchen needs.
Use open shelves in a small kitchen
Open shelves can be the perfect touch for a small kitchen.

While the mobile island makes this little kitchen more functional, Starsiak Hawk and Coyle don’t want the kitchen to get too crowded.
“The kitchen is small and I don’t want to just cram in a bunch of cabinets,” says Coyle. “So I really want a cool shelf in the kitchen corner.”
In the end, they add beautiful open brass shelves that help the room look more spacious and stylish.
Wrapped beams add character
These beams skilfully adapt to the flooring.

While Starsiak Hawk and Coyle are planning the kitchen design, Coyle has a great idea of adding some style to the ceiling.
“I would like to make some kind of beam in the kitchen,” says Coyle. “And I want them to match the color of the floor. So what if we wrap the drywall beams in white oak to give it a traditional touch?”
They match the color to the new vinyl floorboards and give the room a harmonious appearance. It’s a great upgrade that gives the kitchen the homely cottage look that Starsiak Hawk is hoping to create.
In the end, the house looks beautiful and David and Courtney decide to list it for $ 300,000. If they sell at list price, these novice fins make $ 37,500. Meanwhile, Indianapolis is looking better every day!
