Heavy rain could cause septic issues

TAYLOR, Missouri (WGEM) – Since most of the Tri-States have rained between five and eight inches of rain in the past week, some problems with the septic system could arise.

The excess runoff has saturated the soil.

Cody Martin, co-owner of Martin Pumping LLC, said Friday that it could cause satiety problems in the septic tanks.

“With all that rain, it could dam your septic tank and saturate your drainage field, and then the sewer would flow back into your house and you don’t want that to happen,” Martin said.

Martin said the heavy rain event highlighted the importance of regularly pumping and maintaining your septic tanks.

“Regular maintenance is important because if you don’t pump your tank regularly, your solids can get into your drain field and cause failure. And then you have to build a new drainage field, which is quite expensive, ”Martin called.

He said he recommends people pump their tanks every three to five years.
