Exploring the depths

The headline said it all. Goa’s loss to Gujarat in the West Zone qualification for the Santosh Trophy was without a doubt a shock. Then there was Goa’s depressing start to the ISL campaign, losing both games. Football fans in the state have never experienced anything like this and had a lot to say

Life has ups and downs! You gain something, you lose something. See the performance of the Indian cricket team at the T 20 World Cup. One of the concerns is the monetary expectations of unperformed gamers. Hopefully everything will be fine soon! – Rodney Severes, Seaman, Majorda It’s very depressing to see this happen. I was the club’s secretary and we won the Santosh Trophy. Those moments were very unforgettable. It felt terrible to hear that we lost to Gujarat. Some of the people at the top should start working hard or stop working or Goa football will die like other sports like volleyball. – Savio Messias, Former Football Administrator, Vasco I haven’t followed the Goa Santosh Trophy team’s performance much this year, but it’s strange that so many top Goa Pro League players didn’t make the team. Gujarat’s manager happens to be Goan too. So he probably knew this team well and therefore the master class. I don’t know how the squad selection works, but we definitely didn’t send our best team. – Conrad Barretto, Football Dugout, Margao Goa has the best grassroots program in the country right now. Even if other countries are catching up quickly. “A swallow doesn’t make a summer”. Goa has just won the Durand Cup. Yes, we have to pull up our socks, other teams are getting better. – James Marcel Mendonca, Duler Mapuca. With Goa being the hub of Indian football, the state teams are always in the spotlight. Since the beginning of the ISL, the critics have increased their level. Every move of a team from Goa is observed. With Goa FC losing the first two games and losing the Santosh trophy team as well, the question of Goa’s dominance was taken to a whole new level. But as a Goan and a fan of Goan football, I don’t mind if Goa’s dominance is questioned as most ISL teams scour the Goa Pro League straight for top talent, with a large number of Goan players doing their trade in the ISL and i league. As for the Santosh Trophy Team, there are better players in Goa who are not selected on the team. And FC Goa is simply in bad form, which is quickly reversed. So it is too early to judge Goan football with its deep and long history. – Johnny Carvalho, sound engineer, Nagoa, Verna Players who haven’t even played football properly for 90 minutes here in Goa received the first 11 preferences. I really don’t understand how and why? You will lose first. The selection of the team’s coach for the Santosh trophy tournament must be scrutinized and removed. A coach who led the Goa Pro League for two seasons in a row didn’t get a chance. The appointed assistant coach wasn’t even part of a team in the last season of the professional league. How does he even get the chance to be there as an assistant coach? Some players had a lot of injury concerns at the start of the Goa Pro League season. I don’t understand how these people got a chance there and were brought there. There were many more players who deserved a place. If you take the players based on their pro league stats from last year, many were left out – Valley Rodrigues, footballer, Cortalim I don’t think we need to panic anytime soon. As for the Santosh Trophy roster for Goa, it was a young, inexperienced team compared to the big names who have played on the tournament’s glorious past. With many of Goa’s top players trading in tournaments like the ISL, it is not possible to send the best team. For FC Goa, the tournament is still in its infancy. Our problems were not compounded by the numerous injury problems experienced by some of the key players. As soon as these players become available, we’ll see a different picture. We still believe in Goan Football as a whole. #VivaGoa – Granny Tunes, musician, Vasco-Da-Gama
