(WXYZ) – As the weather gets colder, the possibility of having to deal with frozen pipes grows.

But your pipes don’t have to be a victim of the freezing temperatures.

The American Red Cross reports that the pipes that are more prone to freezing are exposed to those exposed to severe cold, such as: B. Sprinkler lines. Pipes in unheated indoor areas such as basements or garages; and pipes that run against exterior walls with limited insulation.

Some local housing management companies have begun advising residents to protect their pipes from the cold expected in Metro Detroit next week.

They recommend leaving the heating on and setting it to no less than 55 degrees, keeping the windows in the residential units closed, and opening the cabinet doors under the sink and basin to allow the heat to get into the hidden pipes.

Consumer reports also suggest some simple ways you can avoid a household disaster.

  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors

  • Let the cold water drip from a tap

  • Keep the thermostat at the same temperature day and night

  • If you don’t want to be around in cold weather, leave the heating on in your house

  • Add insulation over the long term to attics, basements, and crawl spaces

On a blog about consumer reports, John Galeotafiore, who oversees consumer reports testing of household products and electrical appliances, says, “If you suspect the pipes are frozen, be careful when thawing because if the pipe has already burst, the water will come flow out and flood your house. “

They list the correct steps to take when trying to thaw your pipes here.
