How to prevent water pipes from freezing during frigid temps

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – Temperatures are colder than all winter. This can become a threat to water pipes both inside and outside the home. Local plumbers in Topeka advise people to take special precautions to avoid damage.

Opening cabinet doors all over the house may seem strange at first, but it can actually help avoid frozen pipes. This allows warmer air to circulate through the pipes in other areas of the house, making it difficult for the water to freeze.

“The really big kicker is the damage they can do,” said Cole Thronton, a Topeka plumber. “Even if just a crack in a pipe or just a joint recedes because it’s frozen or splitting, it will trickle down and you will most likely not see the damage until later.”

Insulating sleeves are also very helpful. These sleeves, usually made of foam, protect outer pipes from inclement weather. If a pipe is exposed or broken, it must be sealed to prevent further damage to the pipes.

Once temperatures have warmed up again, most plumbers recommend checking all aspects of the installation around the house to make sure nothing has been damaged by the temperature and weather.
