Howe Street in Southport reopens following sewer pipe replacement project

SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) – Southport officials announced Friday that Howe Street – the city’s main thoroughfare – has reopened to traffic in time for Labor Day weekend.

The closure was necessary so that construction crews could replace decades-old sewer pipes under the roadway.

“This was a big project for the city and a critical step in protecting Southport’s infrastructure. We’re excited to see Howe Street reopen well before the mid-September deadline. We know this has been an inconvenience for our citizens and visitors, but we appreciate everyone’s patience and flexibility, ”said Tom Stanley, Southport public works director.
