There’s nothing worse than the first time you spot a cockroach in your kitchen. The creepy animal catches you off guard while lounging on the bread you left out – or worse, lands on top of you. Experts say there are more subtle signs that cockroaches are hiding in your kitchen, and you should call an exterminator as soon as you spot one. Where there’s a cockroach, there are probably many. Read on to learn what signs of an infestation to look out for and to avoid other mistakes you want to avoid. If you see this terrible insect, call the authorities right away.

According to official pest control, cockroaches congregate near water, such as B. your bathroom or kitchen sink. Often times, the pest leaves a trail of evidence that they have lurked. “Cockroaches that live in areas of high humidity usually produce dark matter and smear them as they crawl,” says a professional pest control specialist and entomologist Nicholas Martin. He notes that the markings are usually found on horizontal surfaces. According to Official Pest Prevention, if you notice reddish brown smears on your tiles, counter, or other kitchen surfaces, you likely have a cockroach infestation and should contact an exterminator. And for ways to spot another pest, if you smell this in your bedroom, you could have bed bugs.

“Cockroaches are very good at playing hide-and-seek,” says Martin. “You can’t hide your poop, however.” Smaller cockroaches produce feces that resemble ground pepper, while adults leave cylindrical feces, he explains. Martin warns that even a small amount of droppings could be a sign of a large infestation. And for more signs, you need to know: if you see this in your yard, you’re preparing for a bug invasion, says USDA.

Cockroach egg sack crates are often found in the nooks and crannies of your kitchen. Martin says you probably won’t discover these cases if you don’t know where to look for them. According to prevention, the eggs are often “placed in a sheltered place like the cracks and crevices in your kitchen or bathroom where they normally live”. If you see an egg carton, you want to destroy it. Each case contains between 30 and 50 eggs per official pest control. Cockroaches nibble on almost anything. Large infestations can leave chew marks on a variety of items in your pantry, including food packaging, Martin says. When you notice something has gnawed on things in your closets, it’s time to call an annihilator. Even if you don’t have cockroaches, you are sure to have another visitor on your hands. And in order for more insects to keep an eye out for those terrible bugs you forgot, they may come back soon, destroyers warn.
