The work includes more than 23,000 feet of aqueduct, a new booster station and a new high-level storage tank
PEORIA, IL – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Illinois American Water is investing over $ 10 million to modernize its water system in the Peoria area. The work includes a new booster station, elevated storage tank, and a 23,000 foot aqueduct.
Booster station project
Construction of an existing booster station in Bartonville near Enterprise Drive will begin this spring. The booster station will contain additional emergency power supply to ensure the continuity of operations. VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) motors are also installed to improve efficiency.
Trip Barton, Technical Director, said, “VFD motors vary the pumping power to meet current needs, rather than pumping at a constant speed. This technology reduces energy consumption and reduces the environmental impact. ”
Elevated storage tank
Construction of a new 150,000 gallon high storage tank on Lake Camelot will also begin this spring. The current storage tank was originally built in the 1970s. It will remain in operation while the new tank is built.
Barton said, “The job includes additional pipe loops for resilience and the removal of multiple dead-end connections that can sometimes affect the taste and color of tap water. These improvements will help us deliver the best possible product. ”
Water pipe replacement
Over 23,000 feet or 4.5 miles of aqueduct will be replaced throughout the Peoria area water system. Drivers should be careful in construction sites and obey road signs, detour routes and flags. You can find a map of the projects here: www.bit.ly/WaterMainReplacementPeoria.
Eric Larson, senior manager of operations, said the company had a process in place to reduce customer impact during construction. He said, “We understand that construction work in customer areas can cause temporary inconvenience. Our priority is to work as safely and quickly as possible. Nothing is more important than the safety of our employees and contract employees. We thank our customers for their understanding in upgrading the water system. ”
Larson added that the upgrades include larger water lines to support water flow and pressure for water quality and fire safety. He said, “By planning to replace the water line, we can fix leaks and avoid wasting water. This is a safer alternative for our customers and employees than waiting for an emergency. ”
Customers affected by a major replacement project will be informed of the effects and all necessary steps via a letter. The letter contains a local contact person for questions. In addition, Illinois American Water and the project contractors will be continuously updated as work is ongoing. These updates can be provided through door signs as well as through Illinois American Water’s customer notification system, which contacts customers by phone and text or email, as the customer chooses. Customers are encouraged to update their contact information through the company’s self-service portal at www.amwater.com or by calling Customer Service at 800-422-2272.
