In Toronto’s Red-Hot Housing Market it’s Sink or Swim… or Float?

As summer draws closer, it’s not just the attraction of the lake that makes Toronto’s waterfront such an attractive place.

Not only is the view unbeatable, but the activities are endless. It also happens that Toronto’s waterfront is a bargain in terms of property prices, especially when it comes to buying a houseboat.

Right now, the average price for a home in Toronto is $ 1,116,736, just slightly above the GTA average of $ 1,104,098 – both of which are record highs.

If you are a homebuyer who feels too expensive out of town and you are open to getting creative with how you spend your money, you can consider giving up real land living and making your waterfront residence.

Denise Doucet, a sales rep at Royal LePage who specializes in floating homes, told STOREYS that houseboats are a great alternative to single storey apartments as they are well below the average price of Toronto houses.

“The views are amazing and constantly changing, the city noise is almost non-existent, there are no city lights, and the night sky is full of stars,” said Doucet.

In addition to the charm of life on the water, according to Doucet, houseboat residents also have access to a variety of activities on their doorstep, including kayaking, paddleboarding, canoeing, winter ice skating, feeding the ducks and swans, and a morning coffee while you watch the sunrise or a glass of wine while the sun goes down – with no buildings or plans to build.

Sure, houseboat living may not be for everyone, but we’re here to share some charming floating homes with you that are offered at unbeatable prices. So, if you have always dreamed of floating happily through life on water, now may be your chance.
