“It’s not always avoidable,” Experts warn frozen, bursting pipes may occur as temperatures drop

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – Cold, record-breaking temperatures hit the entire state of Oklahoma.

For many, pipes freeze or burst, leading to a loss of water supply.

The local plumber and owner of A + Plumbing and Gas, John Gaskill, says that despite your best efforts to leak your faucets and open cabinets, you could still experience frozen pipes.

“It cannot always be avoided that your water pipes do not freeze. We don’t see this weather that much down here, ”said Gaskill.

Gaskill says business is booming, calling customer for customer to need help.

“We’re usually pretty busy, but it’s where we try to refer customers.”

He says the best course of action is to drip hot and cold water on faucets, open closets, and keep your home as warm as possible.

“If you turn the water on and you run out of water, you have to find the source where it was frozen,” Gaskill said.

Gaskill says his own pipes were frozen despite taking his own advice, and the weather is just too cold to keep all the pipes warm.

“We had no water in our house. I actually had to cut a hole in the wall for the utility line from the meter to the house to the house, and I had to put a space heater in the closet to defrost the copper line, ”said Gaskill.

In addition to these issues, Gaskill says, you could also face unexpected issues, such as garage refrigerator thaws.

Because the weather is so cold, the sensors on your garage freezer could think the freezer is cold enough and go off, causing your food to thaw.

“This cold weather pretty much harms everything,” said Gaskill.

Gaskill says if your pipes freeze it is important to find the source of the freezing and try to thaw the pipe. If the pipes are made of copper or PVC, there is a risk of bursting or cracking.
