James River Basin Partnership offering rebates for septic tank pumping

SPRINGFIELD, MO (KY3) – An Ozarks group provides incentives for septic tank maintenance.

About 25% of homes in Missouri have septic tanks. These septic tanks can affect the quality of our groundwater, rivers and lakes. The homeowner is responsible for pumping out the septic tank every few years.

Nathan Lindsey of German Septic says that pumping a septic tank typically costs between $ 200 and $ 400. The James River Basin Partnership offers a rebate program that you can use to cover the costs. Save at least $ 50. It has offered the Fresh Flush discount program for several years.

This year, in partnership with Springfield City and Greene County’s utilities, additional discounts of up to $ 150 are being offered in certain areas to those living in the James River’s upper watershed. Pierson Creek in this area is on the state’s list of impaired waterways for E-Coli. The James River Basin Group is hoping that more pumping of waste will solve the problem. You can get the discount by using an approved pumper such as the German Septic and Grease Separator Service on a Missouri Department of Natural Resources list and filling out a form.

It is recommended that the tank be pumped every three to five years to avoid pollution of the groundwater.

“It’s very important to keep the water clean,” said Lindsey. “When you are at a well, essentially your water flows from your septic tank into your sewage field. If you are at a well and not pumping your tank, you can contaminate your well cavity with sewers. “

Here in the Ozarks, this groundwater flows rapidly into underground caves and streams, as well as into our rivers and lakes. But too often people forget to pump out their septic tank.

“They wait until there’s a problem,” says Lindsey. “Usually you have a backup in the house. They’ll gargle or slowly drain, and often it ends up in the bathtub. You’re getting a sewer in your bathtub, and that is a sign that your tank is full and the sewer is not leaving your house. “
