KMC doubles its workforce for major drains cleaning

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has increased the number of anti-assault teams on Gujjar and Orangi Nullahs in Karachi. The aim is to accelerate the removal of interference from the storm sewers.

A total of twelve KMC teams work on both drains. Six teams work in three different locations along the Gujjar Nullah.

These locations are Chuna Depot near Liaquatabad No. 4, Shafiq Mor to Bangali Para and LandiKotal.

Six KMC teams work along the Orangi nullah near the Chaman Cinema, Safaid Chowk and the Pak Colony.

KMC has strengthened anti-assault teams to quickly remove tampering from storm sewers, said Senior KMC Director Bashir Siddiqui.

“We have doubled the anti-assault teams on Gujjar and Orangi Nullahs,” he said. “There were six teams working on both drains, but now there are 12 teams.”

The KMC has also marked encroachments along the Gulistan-e-Zafar nullah. It is located behind Masjid-e-Roomi in the Pakistani Employees Cooperative Housing Society.

The marking of unauthorized parts of bungalows on Gulistan-e-Zafar nullah has continued for a few days.

Almost 30 bungalows in Gulistan-e-Zafar have additional parts on the rainwater runoff, according to Siddiqui.

These interventions block the flow of rainwater that accumulates on Sharae Faisal.

The KMC has delivered notices to bungalow owners, the official said. They built garages, servants’ quarters, and kitchens by the rainwater drain, he said.

Mazhar Khan, senior director of KMC Katchi Abadi, said the process of marking these invaded parts of bungalows had continued.

Authorities want to clear 20 feet of space on either side of Gulistan-e-Zafar nullah, he said. “The KMC has completed its survey on this matter,” added Khan.
