The state tax breaks that Los Angeles homeowners have availed of in their thousands will expire in just a few weeks and most likely will not be replaced in their current form in 2011. Through December 31, 2010, homeowners can receive tax breaks of up to 30% (up to a maximum of $ 1,500) on upgrades to highly efficient hot water installations such as instant water heaters. The instant water heater technology uses less energy than traditional water heaters because it heats the water when needed instead of storing a full tank. Heating hot water is one of the main energy consumers in the home, according to the EPA.
As it stands with the current tax proposals, the 30% tax credit up to a maximum of $ 1500 will be replaced by a lifetime credit of 10% up to a maximum of $ 500 from 2011. This credit can only be used once and customers who have previously used a similar tax credit will not be eligible.
