Major £50million project begins to replace 13,391 miles of gas pipes in South Cumbria

BARROW and the South Lakes Gas Pipelines will be part of an annual regional program that will expand thousands of kilometers of piping.

Northwestern gas management company Cadent has announced its annual £ 50 million pipe modernization program in the region.

£ 50 million will be invested to complete 485km of pipe work in many areas.

The focus of the operation is on introducing cleaner gases and helping the UK meet its net zero carbon emissions target.

Each year, Cadent replaces approximately 300 to 350 miles of its 21,000 mile underground piping system in the northwest.

These are mostly aging metal lines that are nearing the natural end of their safe life.

Barrow will see 8,328 meters in pipe upgrades and the South Seas area will see 5,063 meters.

Craig Horrocks, director of Cadent gas pipeline modernization works in the area, said, “More than 80 percent of households in the Northwest depend on gas for central heating and it is our job to make sure they get it safe and reliable for the minute one every day of the year.

“We are also pleased that hydrogen, a low-carbon gas at the point of use, and low-carbon biomethane, a gas made from waste, will soon arrive in our grids.

“Both are important for the UK to achieve its zero carbon goal.

“When our older inventory reaches the end of its safe life, we need to replace it.

“In most cases we can insert the new pipe into the old pipe. This technique cuts the time of any project and means we don’t have to dig as many digs.

“It also means an end to the frequently occurring visits – with the associated malfunctions – to fix faults in the older metal mesh, as these are gradually showing signs of age.

“We know it’s not ideal, but my team is determined to act as quickly as possible and get the job done as smoothly as possible.”

Kevin Hegarty of Cadent Gas commented, “We will be working with the local authorities to find out exactly when it is most convenient to work and to minimize the inconvenience to the area.”

“This is an annual project for us and it started on April 1st.

“There are an estimated 21,000 miles of pipeline beneath the northwest, and we will be upgrading those that are at their end of life or in need of repair.”

A total of 485,178 meters of pipeline will be expanded by Cadent in 35 areas in north-west England in 2021.
