‘Manual cleaning the only option in some areas’ | Ludhiana News

Ludhiana: Despite many unpleasant incidents in the past and the ban on manual cleaning, sewer cleaners have to penetrate the manholes of the city. Even though the city council has the machines, officials say there are certain areas where manual cleaning is the only option.
“The sewer system usually remains clogged in areas with a migrant population, such as Giaspura, Dhandhari, Prem Nagar, Durga Colony, Vijay Nagar, Muslim Colony, Railway Colony, Punjabi Bagh and Tibba Road, among others. This is where most of the sewer blockage complaints come from. Anyone who lives here in Vehras throws everything into manholes, regardless of whether it is plastic bags or other rubbish, ”says an official.
Another official said, “We know that manual cleaning is prohibited. We don’t let cleaners down the sewers, but sometimes we don’t have a choice. We ask you to equip the cleaners with safety sets, but these are not easy to use. If you use the safety kits, you cannot enter the shafts and clean them. ”
Ranbir Singh, chief engineer of the MC operations and maintenance cell, says: “We have ordered in writing that no one is allowed to enter manholes for manual cleaning. When someone goes in, they do it according to their own will. No official asks them to do so. ”
The MC has 16 spray lance cleaning machines. In addition, some small machines were recently acquired as part of the Smart City mission. Nevertheless, in many parts of the city you can see cleaners cleaning the sewage system.
While the MC officials often visit other cities to study their better technology and beautification ideas, there has not been a trip aimed at improving sewer cleaning techniques.
