Marlborough Adult Apprentice Wins Plumbing World Scholarship

Matthew (Matt) Bird was awarded a Plumbing World Scholarship at the 2021 National New Zealand Plumbing Awards in Blenheim on Friday March 26th.

Matt is in his first year of training as a Masterlink plumber and installer with Hunter Plumbing & Drainage – a company that conducts residential and commercial projects across Marlborough.

In his nomination, Owner Guy Hunter said, “An Award Winning Apprentice, I think, is someone who is reliable, proactive, positive, efficient, and really cares about the clients we work for. I’ve just described 100% of Matt.”

“While Matt has a lot more to learn in his chosen profession, he is a valued member of this company. Matt has a great sense of humor and this is a big part of what helps him in everyday situations. It really surprises me How quickly Matt learns not only the basics of plumbing but also the more technical side of the trade I’m very proud of Matt and also of my team who gave Matt the time and energy to pass their knowledge on to a young man who is so much want to learn. “

After a very tough upbringing, Matt turned his life around starting his own family and made it his mission to be the best provider for his family he could be.

Matt did an excellent job for client Switched on Housing, who is responsible for maintaining the Kainga Ora properties. At 31, he is a caring man who can have a conversation with anyone.

“My first experience with Matt’s work ethic was on a job where the customer relied on the state for help and support,” said Andrew Begg of Switched On Housing. “Not only did Matt do an exemplary job for this client, he also made sure the client was comfortable enough that she gave my team excellent feedback.”

Matt works tirelessly and at a high level and has proven himself to be reliable in all situations. He’s a great ambassador for his company and our business, and acts in a way that respects customers, employees and work colleagues.

Plumbing World Scholarships are awarded to Masterlink trainees who have demonstrated hard work and a passion for the industry in their studies.

Matt wins a trophy, certificate, and $ 1000 to spend at his local Plumbing World office.
