Metro Water bans cleaning of septic tanks by pvt operators

Chennai::

Those violating the regulation would act under manual cleanup and atrocity prevention laws against SC / ST, she warned.

“City residents should not clean up plugs in sewers and other related work themselves or through the appointment of contractors. All sewer-related cleaning and maintenance should be reported to Metro Water, and the work should only be done through the board, ”a utility press release said.

A Metro Water official explained the reason for the order being given, saying it was done to prevent the deaths of workers cleaning the sewer pipes.

It also warned homeowners and tenants, owners of private organizations, hotels, lodges, commercial establishments, theaters and contractors of action if a worker dies of asphyxiation while cleaning sewers. According to an order from the Supreme Court, the owners should provide the deceased’s family with compensation of Rs. 10 lakh.

Measures would also be taken under the Manual Scavengers Prohibition Act and its Rehabilitation Act of 2013, the Amendment of Planned Caste and Planned Tribes (Atrocity Prevention) Act of 2015 (if the worker is SC or ST) of Section 304 (A) of the Indian Criminal Code.

Metro Water instructed residents to call the headquarters number (4567 4567), which works 24/7, to alert sewer blocks in homes or public places. You can also call 14420 to complain about unsafe sewer cleaning.

“Metro Water does not allow workers to enter sewers for cleaning and workers are provided with safety equipment,” the press release added.
