MIDLAND, Texas (ABC Big 2 / FOX 24) – Several Midland ISD schools were flooded after frozen pipes burst during the bitter cold.

The maintenance teams have been busy cleaning up the mess for the past few days. The district wants all students back on campus by Monday.

General Tommy Frank’s elementary school had an entire hallway and several classrooms were flooded after a bathroom pipe burst.

“When I showed up yesterday, the maintenance crew of seven was just shoveling water out the doors,” said Andra Jones, director of General Franks Elementary. “This is not necessarily their wheelhouse, but they did everything they could to save everything in the classrooms as best they could.”

All the water is gone now, but Jones is still concerned about her students.

“My first concern was where we were going to have classes on Monday,” said Jones. “Because we want children back, we are already six days behind the weather.”

Maintenance teams and private cleaning companies work around the clock at all affected locations.

“It’s all hands on deck,” said Kellie Spencer, MISD’s chief operations officer. “The most important thing is that the rooms are ready for Monday so the kids can return. That way everyone is on deck to make sure this happens.”

The flood damaged not only the classrooms but also the school computers.

“Computers so far look like they’re good,” said BJ Rambo, IT support manager for MISD. “This weekend we’re going to turn them on, make sure they tune in, and see what to replace.”

But Headmistress Jones is grateful for the hard work and dedication of her maintenance staff to her students.

“We need to keep focusing on children and driving learning and not having excuses for it.”

Despite the rush to clean things up, Midland ISD said it was on track to get the students back to campus on Monday.
