Mobile Home Park With Failing Septic Has Unwanted Visitors: Rats – WGMD

Rats add to the misery of the residents of Donovan Smith Mobile Home Park in the Lewes area.

The neighborhood has been plagued by wastewater treatment plant failures, which have caused sewage to bubble to the surface and bad smells. Many residents drink mineral water.

Now vermin, which is apparently nested in partially collapsed septic tanks, is looking for a new home. In some cases this has led them to local residences.

“Now that these tanks are collapsing because they’re empty, the poor people at Donovan now have rats infesting their homes,” said Mark Schaeffer, Sussex County’s 3rd District Councilor, along with Mike Bradley on WGMD.

Schaeffer said the Department of Natural Resources had been notified, but he also said DNREC did not take this seriously
has been treating persistent failures of the septic system for years.

DNREC filed a violation complaint with the community in early July, and the City of Lewes is ready to connect the Donovan Smith neighborhood to their treatment system. Septic problems in the community go back more than a decade.

“In Lewes, Delaware, in 2021, it will be unbelievable that people will live this way,” said Schaeffer.
