New Inspection Crawler Makes Finding Gas Line Cross Bores in Sewers Faster, More Accurate

Thanks to the new inspection crawler, finding gas pipe cross holes in sewers is faster and more accurate

When we decided to design a new side launch crawler, we started with a blank sheet of paper and wrote down everything our customers asked for.

Envirosight, a market leader in municipal sewage inspection equipment, has launched the new ROVVER X SAT II side launch inspection crawler. The system maneuvers around obstacles and challenging pipe geometries to quickly identify gas pipe cross holes in sewers and other hard-to-reach defects. The crawler can travel up to 984 feet into the main lines at speeds of up to 98 feet per minute and then launch its camera probe up to 147 feet into adjacent service ports at speeds of up to 23 feet per minute.

The ROVVER X SAT II also has a patent-pending belt-driven mechanism that minimizes wear on the push rod while maximizing pushing force. The design, which is easy to clean with field replaceable belts, is designed to increase uptime and keep maintenance costs down. The steerable 8-wheel drive makes it easier to drive past dirt, roots, offsets and protruding taps. During take-off, the pan / tilt side camera with a detachable handlebar navigates in lateral lines through curves and branches.

“The cross-bored location is one of the most critical and challenging applications in sewer inspection,” said Richard Lindner, President of Envirosight. “When we decided to develop a new side start crawler, we started with a blank sheet of paper and wrote down everything our customers wanted – more range, more speed, more traction, more productivity, lower operating costs, unmatched uptime. The ROVVER X SAT II is a direct result of this process. ”

The ROVVER X SAT II can be easily reconfigured for a range of applications and has wheels of different sizes that can be swapped out without tools, as well as a launch slide that accepts commercially available PVC pipes to accommodate different pipe diameters. The entire range of configurations offers starting options for pipes with a diameter of 6 “to 80”. The crawler’s unique collapsible body flexes through vertical entrances just 12.5 inches in diameter and locks rigidly when not in use.

The ROVVER X SAT II system also has three cameras:

  • A start camera with 360 degree swivel movement and + 150 / -30 degree tilt

  • A 5 megapixel target camera that offers digital pan / tilt / zoom functions for a precise start in lines of any size
  • A rear-facing camera to manage the cable as it crawls backwards

Pressure, inclination and distance sensors are fed into a user-friendly interface. Twin-probe transmitters enable the exact positioning of the crawler and the start camera.
