Newark water crisis: NJ city nears completion of lead pipe replacement project

NEWARK, NJ – It’s been about two years since New Jersey’s largest city received national attention for elevated lead levels in its water supply.

Now Newark is on the verge of completing a major initiative to replace the city’s lead pipes and become a role model for other American cities to address such a problem.

How the Newark water crisis unfolded

Journalist and New York Times writer Kevin Armstrong followed the story very closely and joined the PIX11 Morning News to talk about how far they got and how they got there so quickly.

Armstrong said the city is nearing the finish line of the major project and predicts it could be completed sometime this fall.

The author said they had just under 2,000 pipes left after replacing about 21,000 of 23,000 known problematic lead pipes.
