NIA Saves Cherry Garden Residents Over $270K In Soak Away, Septic System Repairs – ZIZ Broadcasting Corporation

NIA CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (July 14, 2021) – – The Department of Housing in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) has completed repairs to 30 broken leachate and sewage treatment plants in the first phase of Cherry Garden Housing Development, delivering over 270,000 U.S. Dollars saved.

Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Alexis Jeffers, NIA Minister of Housing, commended Hon. Spencer Brand, Minister of Public Works, and his Public Works Department (PWD) team for their work in resolving the longstanding infrastructure problem at Cherry Garden.

“Let me praise the minister responsible for public works. Spencer Brand … and his team, including Mr. Alister Thompson [Building Division Supervisor in the PWD].

“This particular project, which removes the troubles faced by about 30 homeowners in Cherry Garden, was actually carried out by Public Works, and we have received glowing reports from these homeowners,” he said.

Sweetheart. Jeffers was addressing the Nevis Island congregation on July 13, 2021 at the time.

He explained that leachate problems had been affecting homeowners for some time, and although the Nevis Housing and Land Development Corporation was no longer responsible for repairs to these homes, the NIA decided to help residents with the costly repairs.

“There were septic tanks and septic tanks that weren’t built properly … and the people there would have had some pretty worrying circumstances, so as a good government and caring government we would have taken the cost and responsibility of cleaning up those septic tanks.” Infiltration problems over there.

“Well, Mr. Brand, I would like to publicly thank you and Alister Thompson and his team and everyone involved in solving these particular difficulties, on the tune of [$274, 470.85],” he said.

Mr. Jeffers also thanked the Premier Hon. Mark Brantley, St. John’s Area Representative, for fulfilling his commitment to the affected Cherry Garden residents and ensuring that the project is carried out.
