PCB homeowner was surprised to find out he was on septic system.

I read with great interest in the newspaper this morning that a $ 4.3 million printed circuit board project should begin late this month and be completed around December to improve water and sanitation. My interest waned a bit when I read that all of the upgrades were planned for the Thomas Drive / Lagoon area.

My wife and I bought a house in the West End of PCB last year so that my in-laws, who have been on the rise for years, could live closer to us on Vestavia Street. A few months later we decided to set up a pool and were surprised to learn that we may not be able to do so because we had a septic tank in our yard. As it turned out, we were lucky because our septic tank was in the front yard.

Of course, we almost broke it from the weight of the dumpster we were sitting on when we remodeled the kitchen and bathrooms. It would have cost us thousands of dollars to fix it, not to mention how angry our neighbors would be at the change in, um, ambience because we had no idea it was somewhere in our yard!

We moved here from Mexico Beach after the hurricane destroyed our home, which was built and hooked up to a sewer in 1985! Everyone in Mexico Beach was hooked up to a sewer. Now Mexico Beach was a small town of maybe 1,200 people; Panama City Beach is a city of 14,000 permanent residents and 80,000 to 100,000 in summer and snowbird season. Well, which other septic tanks would you expect to have within its city limits?

Apparently there are eight of us on Vestavia who have septic tanks; The rest of Vestavia and our neighboring neighbors are all connected to the sewer. This seems like an accident waiting to happen to me.

It also seems to me that if we have $ 4.3 million to improve our PCB sewer lines, it would be an excellent opportunity to fix the problem in the small enclave on Vestavia. There would be a lot left for the East End.
