Plumber: Farm-style kitchen sinks offer guilt-free extravagance | Home

Q: Dear Ed, I would like to add a farm style sink to my new kitchen plans mainly because they are so pretty. But I feel guilty about spending extra money on cosmetics. In addition to being beautiful, do sinks also offer farmers real work benefits? Cindy, Michigan

A: Kitchen sinks on the farm or in the apron can be as tough and industrious as they look delicate and dazzle. It’s also a versatile sink with many installation options, material options, and features.

With all of this, I can tell you from my experience that farmhouse sinks offer work advantages that can help you with your kitchen tasks.

First, they are usually deeper sinks with an oversized single bowl design. This really helps with washing or filling larger pots and pans. Next, the exposed apron front can actually act like a drip lip to help guide spills away from the cabinets below. Since a farmhouse sink is usually installed a little further forward than a standard drop-in sink, reaching into the sink can be easier.

So you don’t need to feel guilty about this plumbing pleasure. A farmer’s sink can help you with the kitchen chores until the cows come home.
