Question: Dear Ed, I would like to install a new “water-saving” toilet. From what I’ve read, I like the “Dual-Flush” model concept with lighter washes for liquids / light TP and standard washes for solids. Can you give me some tips on how to flush the toilet, please? Barry, Connecticut

Answer: With a double flush toilet, users have a little more control over how the toilet distributes flush water. From what I’ve seen, a double flush toilet is considered a water efficient toilet because it is a highly efficient choice for easier flushing. As with any toilet, check and meet all local installation codes before purchasing and installing it.

In choosing the type of double flush toilet that can be a good replacement for you, I worked with a few types:

Manual Tower Flush – This model usually has two manual flush buttons on top of the toilet tank lid.

Electronic Flush – In many high-tech toilets, these models can use electronically controlled pumps to set the flush time.

Manual Dual Lever Flush – Choose a full or reduced flush with the same control mechanism using a two-step lever on the side of the tank. Now that’s a clever lever!
