Poopy Pipe Cancels Court in Aged Georgia Government Building | Georgia News

COLUMBUS, Georgia (AP) – A burst pipe in the main Columbus government building has thrown bird droppings, leaves and other debris into a judge’s office.

Muscogee County Supreme Court Justice Gil McBride told WRBL-TV that he found rubble and water in his suite of offices in the Columbus Government Center earlier this month. It holds offices and courtrooms for the consolidated governments of Columbus and Muscogee Counties.

City manager Isaiah Hugley says a 51-year-old cast iron pipe that was carrying rainwater from the roof broke.

McBride canceled the hearings on Wednesday and the rest of the week. He says he held hearings in his 11th floor courtroom Tuesday because they were too late to cancel.

The building was flooded twice in 2018 due to water leaks.

“And somehow you have the feeling that you have returned to the future. You are wondering what is going on. Why hasn’t it been dealt with yet? asked McBride. “Why are we still locked out of courtrooms three years later and unable to use the facilities because of the condition of the building?”

A neighboring courtroom of the regional court was also affected.

Hugley said the city is testing the air quality to make sure the building stays safe.

Columbus leaders say they plan to ask voters for a special sales tax in November to repair or replace the building.

“In any old building, be it an old building, an old house or an old car, something will break when it’s 50 years old,” said Hugley. “And we had a lot of breaks in this building. So the elected officials are considering other options for a judicial building and administrative officials.”
