Portland Wednesday traffic: N. Mississippi sewer repair to cause traffic delays

Delays and road closures are likely as construction begins on an urgent sewer repair project on North Mississippi Avenue.

Crews start at 7 a.m. on Wednesday and affect the journey between North Shaver and Fremont Streets. Working hours are from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and occasionally around eight weeks on Saturdays.

Environmental Services, Portland’s sewage and stormwater utility, will replace and expand the 100-year-old sewer system that is deteriorating and too small for the region. The project will increase the sewage capacity.

Travelers should expect delays and road closures. The three-story section of the Mississippi between Shaver and Fremont may be temporarily closed to vehicle traffic during working hours. Drivers should follow all traffic signs. The sidewalks remain open to pedestrians, wheelchairs, and bicycles.

En route to a major overnight freeway closure this weekend: Access to Interstate 205 northbound will be from Interstate 5 in both directions from Friday through Saturday June 19-20 at midnight for the installation of signs blocked.
