Corpn. Take measures to avoid waterlogging and flooding
Despite the lockdown and lack of manpower, the pre-monsoon cleanup operation by Kozhikode Municipal Corporation is well underway across the city. As the monsoons are expected to start within a few weeks, the company is making every effort to prevent waterlogging and minor flooding in parts of the city during each rainy season.
The cleaning of the drains is carried out in large parts and in the center of the city. Several truckloads of rubbish, mostly plastic bottles and tote bags, are being taken from the drains on Mavoor Road. New drains on the street and in the surrounding areas are properly covered, but the rubbish enters the drains through small outlets to allow the water to drain from the street. When different types of cables are run down the drains, trash gets stuck in them, creating unnecessary problems for the workers cleaning them. Mavoor Road, especially the area near the mofussil bus stop, is prone to flooding each year during the monsoons.
The new rainwater drainage set up a few years ago as part of the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project (KSUDP) should solve the problem. However, after KSUDP stopped working, the project was placed under the Amrut program. There are parts of the rainwater network that have yet to be completed. As a result, the waterlogging problem on Mavoor Road has not yet been fully resolved.
Although £ 50,000 has been allocated to all of the company’s stations for the first phase of cleaning, work has not started on all stations. The pre-monsoon cleaning work is delayed at many stations due to closures, restrictions on security zones and unavailability of workers. The work can continue as soon as the lock is lifted.
